 The following is a list of apple processors assembled by Marvin A. Owings, Jr., Agricultural
Extension Agent, North Carolina Cooperative Extension. It was published in the North Carolina
Extension Newsletter.
National Fruit Co. in Winchester has closed some of their North Carolina facilities and will be
consolidating operations in Winchester according to an article in the August 1998, Great Lakes Fruit
Newsletter.
This list is not all inclusive, and there are other eastern processors not listed. Unfortunately,
the apple industry is facing a number of problems and contacts should be made now. The over
supply of apples and worsening dormant conditions in the far eastern countries will make it a difficult
marketing year.
a. Washington State expects to pack 100,000,000 bushels of apples; a large portion that will
be marketed domestically and in Eastern states;
b. Many small cider processors have closed due to the recent FDA rulings on labeling and the
fear supermarkets have of selling unpasteurized cider;
c. Foreign countries have flooded the U.S. juice market with apple juice concentrate
suppressing juice prices.
