[Apple-Crop] Test, IFTA in NZ, and MyIPM and Harvesting windfalls

Hello all,
Harvesting apples from the ground is a speciality of Pattenden (https://www.pattendenmachinery.co.uk/Cider-Apple)https://www.pattendenmachinery.co.uk/Cider-Apple
Woolly aphid came up for discussion in New Zealand today. It was felt that insecticides that are unhelpful to predators of the aphid play a big part in its resurgence(s).

Michael,

I've given sweepings to locals with pigs, and feed to my few dozen goats, but otherwise they just make a smelly compost. I can mechanically pick up in two days what used to take 18 man days so we aren't too far off of where we'd like to be. For $10,000 the Perouso looks interesting if I can reduce the number of passes thru the orchard. Scalping has also been an issue we've been trying to deal with. Pretty easy to shave up and sweep an eight foot by five foot strip of turf into sweeper.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Mo Tougas

Maurice,

The only market would be Hog/Pig Farmers looking for supplemental feed.

Also Dairy Farmers like apple mash for cows.

The Cider Mill I use sells all the pressings to these type local farms.

 Hi Kurt,

I've seen units there but as you say no cider maker would be happy with stones in the bin. We're at the point of raking them out from under trees with either a paddle rake or spider to drive middles (more or less) and then either sweeping with modified Sweepster or grinding with flair chopper and then fluffing up the mash a day or two later to facilitate drying. Capacity of sweepster pretty small. I did hear of a Perouso Koalo 1600 https://www.peruzzousa.com/Collection_Flail_Mowers_s/106.htm but of course apples would be of no use but at least orchard would be clean, I'm guessing. I don't know if there is a market for whats left on the ground Monday mornings.

Hello Mo,

I have long been looking at and considering the automated drop apple picking up machines that are plentiful over there….but have concerns about them picking up stones with the fruit as well as not being a able to differentiate between good and bad apples….which means the need for grading what is picked up. I would love to demo one here but it is not easy to find one on this side of the ocean. For this reason we continue to do our orchard floor cleaning using man power after each big picking day.

Best,

Kurt

Apple-crop has been kind of quiet, I have three things on my mind:

1.) testing apple-crop to make sure it's still working

2.) if interested, follow International Fruit Tree Association while in New Zealand on Twitter using the hashtag #iftaNZ, or by visiting it's Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/IFruitTree/

3.) check out the newly revised MyIPM app or both iOS and Android, search for MyIPM in their respective app stores; the app is designed to help with fungicide and insecticide resistance management, however, it has lots of other useful information to make spray decisions, all at your (smartphone) finger tips -- feedback on using it can be directed at me...

Spring is coming...

Jon
