IDFTA 2000 Goes Down-Under

Day 3 -- Saturday, February 5

We departed Rotorua for Napier, making a stop in Taupo, the approximate geographic center of the north island, and headquarters for many outdoor activities including boating, fishing, hiking, and exploring. Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand, and the air and water in the region seemed particularly clear and clean.

Shortly after exiting Lake Taupo, the Waikato River flows through a gorge with amazing speed and clarity. Just above the gorge the River is harnessed for hydropower.

Famous for the rainbow trout fishing found in the region, the Taupo City park sports a sculpture of the fish sculpture at it's crossroads.
