The U.S. Apple Association's 1998 Apple Crop Outlook and Marketing Conference,
to be held Aug. 20 and 21 in Chicago, will include the very latest in world
apple industry information, delivered by a worldwide who's who of speakers.
The conference's agenda will be highlighted by outlooks of the U.S., European
and Chinese apple crops, a futurist view of the world apple supply in 2000
and beyond, and a discussion of the pros and cons of generic consumer-promotion
campaigns. A panel discussion of the 1998 world apple juice concentrate
market is also planned.
The conference will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20 and conclude at
noon the following day. Thursday's agenda and speakers include:
U.S. apple crop overview, provided by Jim Cranney, USApple vice president
of industry services.
European apple crop overview, by Wilhelm Ellinger of the marketing firm
ZMP of Bonn, Germany.
Chinese apple crop overview, provided by Mark Huang of the import company
Excel United Trading of Southgate, Mich.
A processing apple demand overview by Cranney.
Panel discussion, "The 1998 World Apple Juice Concentrate Market: Where
Is It Headed?" Panelists include Tom Stokes of Tree Top, Selah, Wash.;
Jackie Hartog of Hartog Rahal Foods of Chicago; and Tony Cenicola of Citrus
World, Lake Wales, Fla. Bernard Steinhauser of Steinhauser Inc. of Ravensburg,
Germany has been invited to participate.
Attendees will then break into groups for analysis and discussion of the
regional U.S. crop outlook.
The conference will continue Friday with the following agenda, concluding
at noon.
U.S. regional crop discussions, to be presented by U.S. industry leaders.
Canadian apple crop outlook. Tom O'Neill of Norfolk Fruit Growers Association,
Simcoe, Ontario, has been invited to deliver this report.
Mexican apple crop outlook, presented by Kent Romney, FRUTA-PAC, Nuevo Casas
Grandes, Chihuahua.
A keynote address, "World Apple Supply in 2000 and Beyond," by
Desmond O'Rourke of Washington State University's IMPACT Center.
A panel presentation "Industry Experiences With Consumer Promotion
Campaigns: What Do They Cost? Who Pays? Do They Work?" Panelists will
include Tom Gallagher of Dairy Management Inc., Chicago and Hoy Carmen of
the University of California-Davis. A beef industry panelist will also participate.
